Portland Me. July 14, 1866

To the

Mayor of Portland

Respected Sir,

I can give employment to about twenty ladies of good address, as canvassing agents for new and salable publications of a high order, and which are sold by subscription only. It is usual to exact payment in advance for a “fib out”, ie a sample book and a subscription book but that those in destitute circumstances may at once find profitable employment, I propose, upon your recommendation, to start them in business without cost to themselves.

Respectfully,

Your Obt. Servant
