Description

As early as 1806, Deering's Bridge connected Portland with the nearby village of Woodfords at the juncture of Kennebec Street and Forest Avenue (which was then known as Green Street). The bridge spanned a creek running from Back Cove and formed a dam affording tidal water-power for a grist mill.
Across the mill pond was Deering Oaks.
