Abstract

Portland School Committee members Mike Roland and Dory Anna Richards-Waxman are big supporters of Portland education, but are split on the $1.2 million bond issue to complete renovations at the city's three middle schools. Opponents of the bond issue say City Manager Robery Ganley set the original cost of the project at $15 million in 1989, and the cost of the extra work at $1.2 million, based on what could be borrowed without affecting the property-tax rate. Don Meehan of the Portland Taxpayers Association wants another bond issue on the May ballot to pay for the essentials, such as heating and electrical systems. Details.
