Abstract

Deirdre Nice, owner of the St. Lawrence Church on Congress Street in Portland, is attempting to sell the church to the new nonprofit Friends of St. Lawrence Church. The group wants to convert the church into a community center, but needs to raise money for the purchase and restoration. The belltower of the church is in immediate need of repair, and the total cost of restoring the church could run over a million dollars. The 1897 church is on the National Register of Historic Places, and is for sale for $71,000.
