Abstract

"City" piece on addiction treatment facilities. The 28-day inpatient treatment programs that were popular in Maine in the 1980s have been affected by managed care, and now some people who need intensive inpatient treatment are unable to receive it. The state budget crunch is adding to the squeeze on remaining nonprofits, forcing the Addiction Resource Center in Bath to close its inpatient unit June 14. Pat Connor of ARC is developing what may be the model for other facilities funded by the Maine Office of Substance Abuse. Alcoholics Anonymous was affected by the proliferation of inpatient treatments, and now with resources shrinking AA is recommiting itself to its original mission. Details.
