Abstract

Feature article on some of the successful entrepreneurs operating in Portland, including Magda Adrien of Adrien's Society, which makes bras; Lori Axelson of Melodious, a custom music box company; and Gabrielle Melchionda of Mad Gab's, a lip balm business. The city of Portland has loaned local enterprises around $3 million since 1991, gaining or keeping nearly 800 jobs for its efforts. Ann Tenpenny of Tex's Tortillas moved the company from Portland to Westbrook because rents are cheaper and there is room to grow. Marion Pevarneck of Maralyce Ferree Contemporary Clothing Design located in Scarborough because there were no buildings available in Portland. Related article on Portland city manager RoBert Ganley and his work in both South Portland and Portland encouraging economic development.
