Abstract
Federal housing authorities have decided not to renew funding for YouthBuild, a program, sponsored by Portland West Neighborhood Planning Council, that teaches construction and academic skills to troubled youth. Portland West director Ethan Strimmingly said that because of the lost funding he must reduce the number of students next year from 50 to 12 and lay off seven staff members, some of whom might be rehired. The lost grant federal Department of Housing and Urban Development grant amounted to $695,505. Strimling hopes the national leaders of YouthBuild will decided to fund the Portland program.
