Abstract

"City" piece noting that interest in a plan put forth by Ken Curtis, John Menario, and Buz Fitzgerald for the construction of hotel and convention center on the Portland waterfront, on property now leased by Bath Iron Works, seems to be dying. Alan Caron, a Fitzgerald business partner in other matters and a BIW consultant, said he is pleased. Acting on behalf of BIW, Caron has interviewed about two dozen people, ranging from neighborhood activists to city councilrs, to determine their views on the future use of the property. He found little enthusiasm for the hotel-convention-center proposal, but was offered few alternative ideas. BIW has an option the buy the property for a mere $5.4 million, and local officials fear that General Dynamics, BIW's parent company, might decide the fate of the waterfront based on its own bottom line considerations.
