Abstract

Article about how Somali elders in Portland acted as mediators to settle a fight among 15 Somali teenagers that could have resulted in as many as ten criminal cases if the matter had been handled by the judicial system. The Somalis have a long tradition of mediation by elders, and, in this case the elders feared that the violence would escalate if the situation were left unchecked or handled through the criminal justice system. Portland police have accepted the agreement and dropped all charges.
