Abstract

A Japanese exchange student, Kenichi Iwakawa, 19, who allegedly asked for an interpreter before waiving his Miranda rights and offering a confession, might have had his civil rights violated as a result. Iwakawa was accused of the rape of a University of Southern Maine student and arrested August 21. A police videotape of the interrogation was not made available to reporters, but might create a problem for the prosecution because police failed to respond to his request. With related editorial.
