"Politics and Other Mistakes" piece on state representative Libby Mitchell, who is being forced out by term limits and must leave her post as speaker of the House. Mitchell was expected to run for state treasurer, a post filled by the majority party in the Legislature and now held by Dale McCormick, but has changed her mind. She ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the U.S. Senate in 1984, and for a seat in the U.S. House in 1990. In 1996, she became the first woman to be elected speaker of the Maine House of Representatives. With commentary on Republican Robert Leblond's unsuccessful attempt to capture a state House seat representing Portland's West End.
