"City" piece on Portland School Superintendent Mary Jane McCalmon's response to intense public criticism of the school committee's behind-closed-doors decision to grant pay raises of up to 25 percent to McCalmon and other top administrators. The school committee agreed to reconsider the raises on January 6 and provide an opportunity for public feedback. McCalmon sent a memo about the raises to the committee in advance of the "January 6 Board Workshop on this issue" but did not include the memo in the packet sent to the media or to the Portland City Council.
