Abstract

White-collar criminals such as Charles Ware and Christopher Mussenden, both of whom bilked their elderly victims out of tens of thousands of dollars, typically face much shorter prison sentences if convicted than do small-time drug users. Prosecutors relish cracking down on white-collar criminals, but are frustrated with the penalties handed out to the criminals, but defense attorneys argue that longer sentences for white-collar criminals cost money and waste precious jail space.
