Abstract

"City" piece on a lawsuit filed in April 1998 by Regional Waste Systems (RWS) against Central Maine Power (CMP). The suit filed in Cumberland County Superior Court details the dilemma facing the Portland trash-to-energy incinerator. At issue is RWS' contract to sell electricity to CMP through 2008, but doesn't specify a price after 2000. If the price drops as CMP officials insist it must, Greater Portland residents could be forced to cover millions in lost income through higher property taxes. But few Portland officials are even aware of the problem.
