Abstract

"from the outside" piece on women athletes, focusing on a remark University of Maine women's basketball coach Joanne Palombo-McCallie made during a 1998 Maine Sunday Telegram interview on gender and sports. Palombo-McCallie said women want the same opportunities as men, but aren't the same as men. But it was an added comment about how much she enjoys her femininity that upset the author, who suggests that Palombo-McCallie was actually distancing herself from the mannish, lesbian-types in women's sports.
