"Politics and Other Mistakes" piece on rumors that U.S. senator Olympia Snowe has said privately that her next campaign for re-election will be her last. Snowe's current term expires in 2000. If she is re-elected and completes a second term in the Senate, she will have then served eight terms in the House and two in the Senate, for a total of 28 years in Congress. It is also rumored that Snowe and her husband, former governor John McKernan, are close friends and political allies of Texas Gov. George W. Bush, the current front-runner for the Republication nomination for president. If Bush wins the White House, McKernan could play an important role in his administration, and Snowe would wield considerable power in the Senate.
