Abstract

"City" piece on the Boothby Square fountain, which has been at William Johnson's American Museum in Wells since 1983. Johnson said he purchased the fountain at an estate sale in Old Orchard Beach. The city of Portland would like to have it back, but all efforts have thus far failed. The fountain, where horses quenched their thirst, was placed at the intersection of Fore and Pearl streets in 1902, but was removed in 1949 after being hit by at least two motor vehicles. No one seems to know how it found its way to Old Orchard Beach.
