"Politics and Other Mistakes" piece about rumors that U.S. Susan Collins is considering making a run for the governship in 2002. The author speculates that Collins might indeed be willing to walk away from her Senate job because as a moderate in a Republican party controlled by conservatives she is unlikely to ever head a key committee or hold a significant post in the Senate hierarchy. The state's business community fears that Congressman John Baldacci will be the next governor and that he will work with a Democratic legislature to undue a decade worth of corporate gains in workmen's compensation. Collins presents the only viable Republican alternative, but the party would probably lose her Senate seat to Tom Allen, the likely Democratic nominee.
