Abstract

Cover story piece on the Portland Public Library (PPL), which does not have in its collection some books that the author considers important. According to its 1999 annual report, the PPL and its five branches have a collection of 271,258 books, 22,796 audio and video cassettes, CDs and records; and 1,870 periodical titles. With information about PPL's budget, acquisitions process, and Interlibrary Loan program, which offers access to the circulating collections of over 26,000 major libraries worldwide.
