Abstract

Related articles on the huge pile of unfinished logs on Portland's waterfront that last weekend was loaded on a ship for transport to China. The 11,000-cord pile of hemlock logs is valued at $3 million, and represents just 1.3 percent of the amount of unprocessed lumber shipped out of Maine in 1991. One year ago, the hemlock would have gone for pulp chips, and the whole pile would not meet one day's supply for the state's pulp mills.
