Abstract

"Politics and Other Mistakes" piece on the Maine Clean Election Act, which was proposed by the Maine Citizens for Clean Elections and was approved by a majority of Mainers who voted for the measure on a 1996 referendum ballot. The author questions how "clean" the group is, in light of the fact that it was formed by a coalition of special interests ranging from the AFL-CIO to the Dirigo Alliance to the League of Women Voters, which are all groups that regularly lobby the Legislature.
