Abstract

"Cover Story" piece on state represenative Mike Saxl, D-Portland, who is on the verge of fulfilling his dream of becoming speaker of the Maine House of Representatives. Saxl, 33, will be younger than anyone who has ever held the job, including the legendary former Speaker John Martin, who was a couple of months older than Saxl when Martin assumed the position in 1975. It took Martin a decade to get that far. If Saxl is successful, he'll taken his place at the rostrum in just over five years. Saxl, a native of New York, moved to Bangor with his family when he was in the second grade. He now represents Portland's West End, where he has resided since 1992, as well as the Old Port and part of the city's waterfront. He has been a member of the Legislature since 1995, and graduated from the University of Maine School of Law in 1998, the same year he took over the Legislature's number two job as majority leader. With Saxl's position on various issues, a brief look at his agenda if he is elected to serve as Speaker, and a look at his future options if he chooses to remain in politics.
