Abstract

"City" piece on a proposal by Portland City Councilor Peter O'Donnell that would ban pit bull terriers in the city's Old Port and downtown areas. O'Donnell has received calls from people who have been intimidated by pit bulls on city streets. Debi Estrella, a Portland animal control officer, and Suzanne Onos, executive director of the Animal Refuge League in Westbrook, as well as a number of pit bull owners interviewed in the article question the wisdom of the ban, because Portland already has a "dangerous dog law" ordinance intended to protect the general public from dogs that exhibit a pattern of aggressive behavior.
