Abstract

Long detailed article on the alternative medicine's fight for respect and in Portland. Included in the discussion are Merrill Abramson, who practices Ayuveda, the traditional medicine of India, which teachers that there is no barrier between mind, body, and spirt; Reiki master Kristen Watson, who operates Gorham Whole Health, and whose discipline teaches that when the flow of energy through the body is blocked, "dis-ease" results; Beth Kehler, a massage therapist at the Portland Branch of the Polarity Realization Institute, which teaches that health is a reflection of the energy field and which designs therapeutic methods to balance fields for health benefit; and Devra Krassner, a naturopathic doctor at Full Specturm in Portland. Naturopathy, which holds that the body has an amazing ability to heal itself and that the naturopath only needs to encourage the process, was recognized by the state last year when it began licensing the practitioners. Krassner played a role in obtaining state recognition, and now she is likely play a leading role in convincing the insurance industry to cover naturopathic treatments. Details.
