Abstract

"Cover Story" piece analyzing Maine's most recent statewide gay rights campaign. Judging by most of the evidence leading up to the vote on Nov. 7, Question 6, which would have outlawed discrimination in employment, housing, credit and public accommodation on the basis of sexual orientation, was virtually guaranteed to pass. But the bill was rejected by a painfully slender margin of just 1.1 percent, leaving Maine as the only state in New England that does not have an anti-discrimination law protecting gays and lesbians.
