Abstract

"Cover Story" piece on Portland's Land Bank Commission, which was established by the cityccouncil in April 1999. The 10 appointed members of the commission, including City Councilor Tom Kane, have been charged with compiling an inventory of Portland's remaining open spaces with ecological, scenic and recreational attributes. So far, the group has identified 32 properties that it has prioritized and recommends be preserved. Nan Cummings of Portland Trails said her group is also working to preserve a number of properties in the city, and is working jointly with the commission to protect a parcel on the Presumpscot River. With information about similar groups in South Portland and Cape Elizabeth.
