Abstract

"Cover Story" piece on Joseph "J. J." Jeffrey of Saco, who has been using the fortune he made in corporate radio buying up little stations throughout Maine. Some believe Jeffrey is laying the groundwork for reinvigorating local radio in the state. Formerly, Jeffrey was part owner of Fuller-Jeffrey Broadcasting, a media juggernaut that bought over a dozen radio stations across the country before selling most of them in 1999 to Citadel Communications of Las Vegas for $63 million. Jeffrey, now operating as Atlantic Coast Radio Group, has built a new mini-empire of six Maine radio stations. Observers say they expect him to refresh the entire radio broadcast industry in Maine.
