Abstract

"City" piece on Cumberland County treasurer Diane Gurney, whose job may be eliminated. Last year, the county commissioners hired Vic Labrecque, a former business manager at the sheriff's department, to fill a new position called director of budget and planning, which entails handling all financial and purchasing arrangements for the county. Gurney, an elected part-timer, claims Labrecque is taking over her job and that her two-person staff has already been transferred to Labrecque's office at the Cumberland County jail. But because the county treasurer holds an elected position, Gurney's job cannot be eliminated without a public vote.
