Abstract

"Cover Story" piece on how and where to go camping and get back to nature without ever leaving the Portland city limits. Over a four-day period in July, the author and a friend camped in an industrial wasteland off St. John Street, which is owned by Guilford Transportation Industries; in a wildlife preserve known as the Fore River Sanctuary; in Fort Gorges, located in Portland Harbor off the city's East End; and on Casco Bay's Cow Island.
