Abstract

"City" piece on the upheaval among people with mental-health and substance-abuse problems caused by the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Some area mental-health professionals said patients suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are having the hardest time. Karen Westerman, a Portland psychologist who specializes in substance-abuse treatment, said patients became undone after the tragedy. With anecdotal evidence supporting the claim.
