Abstract

"Cover Story" piece profiling Lenny Gauba, 53, of Old Orchard Beach, who is committed to volunteering at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford and Mercy Hospital's Recovery Center in Westbrook for as long as he lives. Gauba, who says doctors at the two institutions helped free him from over 30 years of alcoholism and drug addiction, speaks with groups of outpatients at Westbrook weekly and works one-on-one with patients in Biddeford when doctors call him to meet with people they feel can benefit from hearing his story. With a related article on Glenda MacLachlan, volunteer services coordinator at Mercy Hospital's Recovery Center in Westbrook, who is helping to organize a nonprofit organization to create a series of Oxford House in the Portland area to deal with the critical lack of long-term treatment options for addicts and alcoholics in southern Maine.
