Abstract

"Cover Story" piece on Portland's fledgling hip-hop scene, which recently suffered a set-back when two venues closed: the Better End and Stone Coast Brewing Co. With details about hip-hop performers that are still being booked at the remaining venues in Portland, and with special focus on a local hip-hop group called Ill Natural, which is trying to break into the national scene. Also with details about the success of local radio station WRED (95.7 FM), which stopped its daily airing of the top 40 hits to hip-hop in 2001.
