Abstract

"City" piece on the proposed $12 million Gulf of Maine Aquarium (GMA) research facility, which will be built on the Naval Reserve site off Portland's Commercial Street if two zoning changes are approved. While the proposal falls under approved use of Portland's working waterfront, an aquarium does not and if zoning changes allow GMA to do research, some fear officials might allow the building of the aquarium, promoted as an educational tool for Maine's marine ecology. Mayor Karen Geraghty opposes relaxing zoning requirements so GMA can build its new headquarters because she doesn't want tourist attractions on the waterfront.
