Abstract

The Portland School Department is renting the Sacred Heart School at Mellen and Sherman streets to house King Middle School students displaced by renovations. The department wanted to avoid controversy, so it boxed in four carvings representing the apostles on the front of the building. Deb Andrews, the planning department's historic preservation expert, said her department wasn't informed of any plans to cover up the religious symbols, and is reviewing the situation.
