Abstract

"Shops Talk" piece in which Vanessa Sylvester, a former labor activist, talks with local labor leaders about the state of unions in Maine. The union leaders participating in the discussion include Frank Kadi, a member of the executive board of the Maine State Employees Association; Michael Hillard, a professor of economics, who teaches labor history at the University of Southern Maine; John Portella, secretary of Local 6 of the International Association of Machinists that represents most Bath Iron Works Employees; Jim Carson of Portland, the president of Teamsters Local 340; Dennis Norton, business agent of United Food and Commercial Workers Local 114 and head of the Southern Maine Labor Council; Gene Ellis of Westbrook, the executive director of the Maine State Building Trades and president of Local 567 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers; and Kathleen Casasa, president of the Portland Education Association, a local chapter of the Maine Education Association. With a short piece about the 622-509 vote of Maine Medical Center's nurses rejecting unionization under the Maine State Employees Association.
