Abstract

The nonprofit Peaks Island Land Preserve on July 15 plans to purchase Battery Steele and its 14 surrounding acres. The property is currently owned by the Star Foundation, an educational organization based in Portland, which had the World War II bunker on the market for $70,000. John Whitman, an islander and Portland attorney, says the group plans to leave Battery Steele as it is.
