Abstract

There's a huge new ship at the Maine Maritime Academy (MMA) in Castine called the "State of Maine." She's the forth by that name in forty years, but this one is the most impressive with eight decks and casting shadows from 150 feet above the water. The ship was previously known as the USNS Tanner and was built in Maryland in 1990. She served the U.S. Navy as an oceanographic research vessel prior to being transferred to the MMA. Her formal name now is "TS State of Maine," the TS standing for "training ship," and that's the role she fills at MMA.
