Abstract

Chuck Richards, 81, a retired botany professor from the University of Maine, has created "The Ultimate Maine Garden," a place of enchantment, out of 2 and 1/2 acres of granite ledge. When Richards found the property almost 40 years ago, it was covered with a mixture of mosses, lichens, sheep laurel and exposed ledge. Today it is a magical place of stunning beauty at the end of a dirt road, on the far side of a tiny island that juts boldly out into the Atlantic, miles from the nearest bridge to the mainland. Richards likes his privacy.
