Abstract

The Bar Harbor Hayseeders' Ball was started in 1895, and was the locals' answer to the lavish costume balls, dinner parties and theatrical soirees held by the elite East Coast society people who had discovered Bar Harbor's salubrious summer climate in the early 1890s. This February, the ball marks its 100th anniversary, and attendance at the ball depends on an invitation from one of the 40 Hayseeders who make up the exclusively male club. Details.
