Abstract

"North by East" piece following up a query in the April issue of Down East asking what the oldest year-round and seasonal restaurants in Maine were. The Asticou Inn in Northeast Harbor can trace its roots back to 1883, and the Nonantum Hotel in Kennebunkport has been welcoming diners since 1884. But the winner was the restaurant at the Cliff House in Ogunquit, which opened its doors in 1872. In the year-round category, the winner was Moody's Diner in Waldoboro, which opened in 1930 as a tea room on old Route 1 and then moved to its current location in 1935.
