Abstract

"North by East" piece about John Cleveland of South Paris who got a rechargeable cordless electric lawn mower through a Central Maine Power (CMP) program last year. The mower's battery allows him to cut his own lawn and half of his mother-in-law's before it needs to be recharged, which cost about seven cents and takes about 18 hours. CMP was pleased with the results of the program, but doesn't plan to repeat it this year since commercial models have become available on the market at prices comparable to their gasoline-powered competitors.
