Abstract

Profile of Fred Hutchinson, who has been president of his alma mater, the University of Maine at Orono, since 1992. He has opened up communication around the campus, upgraded academic standards, increased tuition, tightened admission criteria, cut student enrollment, and tried to restore financial stability to the campus. He succeeded president Dale Lick, who was seen as being more focused on the school's sports than its classrooms. With details on the problems Hutchinson has faced, including the perennial problem of trying to get enough state funding, and on his vision for the university's future.
