Abstract

"North by East" piece reporting that Portland took top spot in 1993 among the major New England fishing ports for the volume of fish and shellfish landings, surpassing longtime champs New Bedford and Gloucester, Mass., for top honors. More than 80 million pounds of seafood having a value of $49 million came ashore in Portland in 1993, a far cry from 25 years ago, when the landings were in the 25-million-pound range.
