Abstract

Profile of Stell Shevis, an eighty-eight year old artist who produces intricate enamel pins, wall sculptures and music boxes at her Camden studio. Born in Hartford, Connecticut, she moved to Belmont in 1945. She and her husband, William, were among the founders of the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, now on Deer Isle, and helped establish Maine Coast Artists, the cooperative art gallery in Rockport that now calls itself the Center for Maine Contemporary Art. Bruce Brown, curator of the Rockport cooperative, said that some of the most engaging items in the center's invitational craft show in October were the enamelware pieces by Shevis.
