Abstract

Article on the popularity of snowshoeing, with comparisons of the different varieties of snowshoes available. Scott Sawtell, property officer at the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, said about 50 percent of the snowshoes purchased for the department are high-tech, rather than the traditional wood-and-rawhide variety. Cross himself prefers the traditional models. Bill Mackowski, who makes traditional snowshoes at his Milford farm, believes that traditional snowshoes not only work better, but also connect people to the past.
