Abstract

"Outdoor Maine" piece about August being the best month for an outdoor-related vacation in Maine because most of the tormenting insects have faded into the background. One exception, however, is the midge, a tiny biting insect that can get through the finest window screening. One way to keep the midge out is to pull the shades, since the tiny insect is attracted to light. On those nights when it is too hot to pull the shades, it has been recommended that one spray flea powder on the screen as an anti-midge measure.
