Abstract

Article about Maine's successful effort to help restore the endangered piping plover. In 1986 there were only 1,000 pairs of plovers on the entire Atlantic Coast, and Maine had five only five nesting, supporting thirty birds. By last year, Maine had beach sites, supporting a population of 65 birds, making Maine the only state in the nation where the bird is making a comeback. With details on the birds mating and nesting habits, why it became endangered, and the measures Maine has taken to protect it.
