Abstract

Profile of Richard S. Lee, 76, a horse breeder who owns the Maine Lee Morgan Horse Farm in North Manchester. In 1973, encroaching development forced Lee and his family to leave his father's Merrilee Farm in Augusta, where the Lees had worked and lived for 60 years. His 30 registered Morgans are all direct descendants of the famous foundation sire, Justin Morgan, born in Vermont in 1789. For years, Spring Brook provided water for his horses, but Lee voluntarily participates in the Bond Brook Restoration Project and has fenced off access to the brook to prevent contamination.
