Abstract

"I Remember" column on life during World War II at Camp Walden, a girls summer camp on Walden Pond in Denmark. Helen Herz Cohen, camp director at the time, recalls how the camp contributed to the war effort, including setting up a patrol of Portland Harbor from the top of Mount Pleasant. Groups of six girls would climb Mount Pleasant with sleeping bags, knapsacks, food for three meals, and would then take twelve-hour turns in pairs, on the lookout for enemy planes. Cohen is still the director of Camp Walden.
