Abstract

The Dark Harbor House is owned by Matt Skinner, a retired Boston University professor who also owns a winter resort in the West Indies. The house was built in 1896 for Philadelphia banker George Philler, in the exclusive summer colony of Islesboro. The island home was later purchased by the Islesboro Inn across the road for its overflow guests. Eventually the inn was razed, and the old Philler cottage was slated to be demolished as well, before longtime summer resident Ashley Chanler bought it for $2,500. It is now beautifully restored and has ten guest rooms, most with private balconies.
